Under normal circumstances, I stay away from any reality shows. Reality shows are pretty much based in a reality not of this earth as far as I can tell (need I mention that the houses used in the Real World are mansions?) Anyway, last night, after watching a bunch of previews, I couldn't resist watching American Idol on Fox. Why? I'm a realist (someone who doesn't hesitate to tell you the truth, especially if it will destroy your self image.) and this show is made for people like me. In case you missed it, American Idol is the American version of a British Star search type show. Three judges pick the winners from each city (over a hundred total) and send them to Hollywood to compete over the next few weeks for a chance at pop stardom. Now the good part, at least yesterday and today, the judges absolutely rain down honesty in all it's malicious flavors upon the obtuse and clueless scenesters, wannabes, losers and dreamers. One of the judges, Simon (who was also on the British version) is a fucking riot! He doesn't mince words and tells these misguided fools what's up. I loved it. Making people cry with brutal honesty is a hobby of mine and I could relate.
